Transfer Case Fluid- What the Heck Is It?

Today we will discuss transfer case fluid; when, why, and how we service it.

Why Servicing Your Transfer Case Fluid is Important

A transfer case is a mechanism that is responsible for switching your vehicle from two wheel drive (2WD) to four wheel drive (4WD). If not properly maintained, your vehicles’ 4WD may not work properly or, for that matter, it may not work at all.

A transfer case takes the rotation of the engine and transfers that power to the wheels. When in 2WD mode, it sends power to the rear drive shaft, and to the rear wheels only. Once engaged, the transfer case sends power to both the front and rear drive shafts, allowing all 4 wheels to have power. This leads to a common misconception where many vehicle operators assume, since they don’t use 4WD often, they are not using the transfer case. This assumption is one of the reasons that transfer case fluid is one of the most neglected fluids in a 4WD vehicle. Transfer case fluid is in use any time your vehicle is moving, so, if the fluid is not changed periodically, it can result in leaks, improper lubrication, and even internal failure.

When Your Transfer Case Should be Serviced

Every manufacturer recommends different service intervals for your transfer case fluid. Usually these should be changed every 2 years between 15,000 to 30,000 miles. At Rogers Mobile Lube & Tire, we use Amsoil Synthetic fluid in every application possible. In most cases, Amsoil Synthetic fluids last 50,000 miles or 4 years.

Your transfer case only holds a small amount of fluid, so if it is leaking, even a little, it should be repaired as soon as possible.

Our Transfer Case Service

While most transfer cases are fairly simple to service, some are much more difficult. Some transfer cases even require special vacuum equipment to extract the old worn fluid, and special pressurized fill units that can reach into the deep recesses or the drive train. Fortunately, we carry this equipment on board our service trucks.
