This week we will discuss power steering fluid, what it does, along with when and why yours may need to be serviced.
What does power steering fluid do?
Power steering fluid is the hydraulic fluid that is moved around a loop by the power steering pump making steering easy and reducing “kick-back” from imperfections in the road. Power steering fluid also lubricates and cools the power steering system.
Why you should service your vehicle’s power steering fluid.
A vehicle’s power steering plays a huge role in the safe day to day operation of your vehicle. If not properly maintained many issues could arise resulting in possible steering failures. If power steering fluid is neglected, many issues may occur like unresponsive steering, heavy turning effort, and even damage to power steering components, or even rust if water gets into the system. If the fluid is dirty, worn, discolored, or show signs of water contamination, it should be replaced or as we say “flushed”.
When you should service your vehicle’s power steering fluid.
Most manufacturers recommend servicing your vehicle’s power steering system between 40,000-80,000 miles. Keep in mind if you own a newer vehicle, it may not have power steering fluid, many newer vehicles have electronic power steering, which is maintenance-free. If your power steering fluid is leaking, that is a good reason to have it repaired and serviced as soon as possible. If you are experiencing excess noise when turning, or your vehicle is hard to steer, you should also have it inspected and serviced. Power steering fluid is a hydroscopic fluid meaning it absorbs water which causes it to break down over time. If too much water is present in the system, it can cause rust to form in the power steering components resulting in expensive repair.
How we do it.
Here at Rogers Mobile Lube & Tire, we use Amsoil 100% synthetic multi-vehicle power steering fluid. Amsoil power steering fluid reduces friction and helps seals remain soft for better sealing.
When we perform a power steering service on any vehicle, we do a complete service. This means we extract the old fluid from the reservoir and replace it with new, then we cycle the power steering system several times, then remove and replace the fluid from the reservoir again. We repeat this sequence several times ensuring that all the fluid throughout the power steering system is new, not just the fluid in the reservoir. If you would like to learn more about Amsoil power steering fluid, or any of their other products, or if you would like to know more about how we care for your fleet, you can find our contact info at: https://rogersmobilelube.com/contact-us/
